Our Reefs Are Dying - But There’s Hope

Restoration projects across the world show there’s still time to bring coral reefs back.

The Crisis Beneath the Surface

Coral reefs are home to about 25% of all marine life. Yet, rising ocean temperatures are pushing corals beyond their limits. When stressed by heat, pollution, or sunlight changes, corals expel the algae that give them color and energy – a process known as coral bleaching.

If the ocean doesn’t cool in time, these corals starve and die, leaving behind ghostly white skeletons.

75% of reefs worldwide are currently threatened by human activity.

1.5 B

1.5 billion people rely on coral reef ecosystems for food and jobs.

Some corals can live for over 4,000 years, meaning they’ve survived through centuries of environmental change - but today, climate change is pushing them past their limits.

Reefs: Protecting Life, Health, and Our Future

Help Bring Color Back to the Ocean

Coral reefs are essential. They protect coastlines from storms and erosion, support fishing and tourism economies, and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Without reefs, millions of people lose their food sources, jobs, and protection from rising seas. The loss of coral ecosystems would (and has) ripple across the globe – from the smallest plankton to the communities that depend on them.

Organisms found on reefs are used for their chemical compounds to treat cardiovascular diseases, ulcers, leukemia, lymphoma, skin cancer, and many other diseases. Over half of new cancer drug research focuses on these coral reef marine organisms.
